    Conspicious by his absence on most ships I sailed on as 3/m, even when I took a round turn out of her at 15 knots, probably looked out of his porthole, saw the situation and continued his pre-lunch drinks. Mind you did get a call from the ER wondering why the sun was going round the skylight

    #6 Ivan that’s maybe why the titles were changed to make it easier to remember , as per a previous post 2 engineer changed to 1st. Engineer , 3rd engineer to second engineer , and the 4th engineer to 3 engineer , so they could call each other by their numbers . The full title being from the second to 1st assistant to the Chief Engineer . JS

    fellas 8 by 12 watch was my favorite watch,done my forenoon watch then stayed awake then did my first watch,no need for sleep on that watch fellas and no dog watch, funny to watch old timers try and strike time bells

    The 8 to 12 watch was the best of course, that is probably why the old man had it, plus to keep an eye on the Third Mate. full nights sleep then breakfast, two on the wheel, two working, if no overtime a kip maybe on the boat deck in the Med, a game of cards after tea and away to go.
