When dad was asked what religion he was he would always say
Church of Turkey
He was being funny
Just wondered where he would have got that from?

Re: Church of Turkey
It would be 1961, I think. Docked in Calcutta during Indian census. We form a line in the saloon as part of the census. 'Religion?' demands the Indian babu. Engineer replies 'Bush Baptist'. That is recorded by babu. There are a few more Bush Baptists in the crew until our Dutch carpenter reaches the desk. He is Church of Turkey. I'm next, and instantly convert to Church of Turkey. All this is on record in India and available for future research.

When I was at sea if anyone asked it was Grand Church of Turkey, that used to be a common saying.

The usual next line, after "Church of Turkey" - was "prayer books with handles"!

My sixty something year old neighbour claimed he was a Calathumpian: he got down on his knees every night and prayed for a naughty.
