Re#8, there was an excellent documentary on the collision and sinking of the Empress of Ireland not too long ago on the t.v, think it could have been on the discovery channel.

Thanks John, I did see that programme cannot remember the channel. Think also they did a dive on the wreck as she is not that deep, part of the problems with diving the wreck is poor visibility and dive time is limited due to the currents. She went down in a very short time.

Given that the loss of life in the Empress of Ireland disaster was almost on the same scale as the sinking of the Titanic, it’s amazing how few references are made in popular culture about the tragedy.

We imagine that’s because the disaster was soon forgotten about with the start of the First World War.

If they had made a film of the Empress of Ireland with some sob story attached it would have been remembered. On saying that I am not denigrating the memory of the Titanic and all those who were lost, it's the way modern society thinks.

We all live in a Hollywood world of make belief. They even manage to die gracefully. Not too much research gone into that by the film makers. JS.

More money made from a number of films about her along with the docos than she would have ever made had she survived.

Given the location of the Titanic I would say running aground is out of the question.
