Sailed in the 60s on agreements with F.F.s with carrots attached as an incentive to keep the donkey walking. The one that made me see daylight to some of the more scrupulous owners was the 600 pounds bonus paid after a years contract . There was one flaw however , for every day off charter due to breakdowns of ships machinery or equipment there was a loss of 50 pounds , needless to say that 600 pounds was decimated to zero within 3 months. I have a long memory of some shipowners in years gone by. I hope by today Seamen of the present are being better looked after as in the past there were very few who could make such claims. JS

From what I hear down at the Seamans Mission here in Melbourne conditions have not changed, crew still being screwed by ship owners.
