What name did you use when signing out at the gate, I never saw Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse or Popeye, despite the book being signed by them just before me (Daffy Duck).

Re: Brothels
Anyone been to the old Sloppy Joes Bar in Havana Cuba! Said to have the longest Bar in the days. But there was or is another Sloppy Joes Bar in Key West Florida, also renowned for its Hey Day Antics and Hard Drinkers!
My old Dad told me about the First one, and Boy! some stories from there!

Re: Brothels
I have been in the one in Key West not sure if it was the original Sloopy Joes. It was often frequented by the author Ernest Hemingway. They had a Hemingway look a like night when we were there during a family holiday, I think they have a Hemingway look a like night probably every night.

One lasting memory about Key West was watching the sunsets and the number of street entertainers, good fun.

HI Robert.
The same as my brother, spent a year on a tanker including the Med sometimes, when he got home he used to take my father out and they would both get hammered. Th Tanker was the Athel Chief.

Re: happy valley in curacao
Portline ships used to use Curacao for bunkers, heard about Happy Valley but most of my wanders ashore there in the mid 70's were memorable for heat and lizards - alas, never made it to the infamous valley (

Re: happy valley in curacao
I vividly remember going to Happy valley from the Shell Tanker Hima, Christmas of 1963. I was only 16, and my shipmates were all announcing me as a "Cherry boy" at the gate, and so I got mobbed by the girls. A memorable evening.

[QUOTE=Des Taff Jenkins;414703]I was in Curacao a few times on tankers, but not long enough to do much but a walk about. Can't remember much about the place.

Only thing I remember about Curacao was picking up an ear infection while swimming there, then moving on to Cuba I was sent ashore in Caibarién to see a doctor who kept me ashore for 3 days to have treatment. Reason for being Kept ashore was the ship was at anchor loading sugar from barges, went ashore in one of the barges and returned the same way.

The "MadHouse" was just over the road from the main gate, at least you could have a break in there (possibly an arm or skull). Good steak or Nasi Goreng.
