    Default Ports of registry

Never heard of this port of registry, Majuro. I had to google it. Marshall Islands. I expect our Aussie friends would have known it right away.
Another well known nation shipping registry.

The registration of ships now is all about money, as always was.
Hamilton is one of the biggest number of registrations around.
All the cruise companies though many USSA owned are registered there.
Allows them to still fly the Red Duster as it is still a British protectorate.

But it can have a funny side.

Heard two guys talking about registration on ships,

One said he never knew why so many ships were registered in such a small country as NZ.

Looks better kept than some ships with 'London' on the stern

#4 The Red Duster is not the Red Duster John , it is a defaced Red Duster with the Emblem of Bermuda on the Fly. Somewhat similar to the flag of Hawaii .
Before Australia got the Australian flag of the country the original Red Ensign was used as their national flag. Also the original flag of the RN was the Red Ensign. JS

It's the flag of the country where the Port of Registry is located that is the key - more so than the name of the port marked on the stern. A ship with "Liverpool" on the **** end is no more or less British than one with "London", though sadly there are precious few of either these days. Some flag states are extremely commercially aggressive, offering a "cheap" service - a more modern way of describing what we used to call a "Flag of Convenience".
The British flag, including the overseas dominions and Crown dependencies is no different, there being a very healthy competition between UK and for example, Isle of Man, Bermuda for business. Smaller British Administrations such as Jersey, Guernsey and Anguilla, are only permitted (By the MCA) to register smaller vessels and yachts.

You are correct on that bit about the flag of Bermuda, but my point is that as Burmuda is still considered a British protectorate it allows ships to fly the duster.
For example, ships registered in Honk Cong cannot do this as it is no longer a British protectorate.

In that case why can’t Australian ships fly the Red Duster without the Southern Cross emblazoned on the Fly.. the 11 years I sailed out here the red version of the flag was always hard to find ,so if it was breaking any laws or not don’t know , ijust flew the Australian National flag even though ship was registered in foreign ports . Was never pulled up or fined over it. Flag etiquette barely exists today like it once did. Where youwere fined if not flying the flag on entering port. JS

The only people today of what I have seen are the Americans who still retain a faint semblance of what things used to be by having to have a certain percentage of American nationals if sailing under the Stars and Stripes..Britain gave the game away years ago . The British merchant navy is in an extreme bad place compared wth yesteryear. JS

One flag you always make sure is the right way up is the Saudi Arabian flag. Was some ships master not jailed in Saudi for his vessel flying it upside down?
