New Year.... Did You Know ?
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority ( AMSA) has worked with the Industry to come up with a National Qualification framework for those working across the Commercial vessel Industry.
In the New. year a raft of changes will be rolled out including 5 new certificates of Competency , the phasing out of 3 old certificates of competency will no longer be issued .
There will be changes to Supervisory definitions in order to clarify when a general purpose certificate is required , a new standard for medical fitness assessments for Masters and Crew of domestic commercial vessels, the incorporation of some existing exemptions and the introduction of changes to sea service for some certificates of competency . JS
Maybe re the last hopefully may not have to leave home anymore ? Can be all done on the computer ? Soon will be more certificates than seamen.
JS
As regards the medical maybe it is the end of the day for the head bangers ?

'As regards the medical maybe it is the end of the day for the head bangers ?'
Looking back,as all of us here do,'twas the headbangers who occasionally made life more interesting at sea--and who either contributed to many a watchful sleepless night or at the very least premature greying of our barnets,or complete loss of the same! Still a few of those HB's around---perhaps even aboard here!
Anyways- glad I got my proper tangible certs of competency (esconced away in a damp-proof sea going attche case up in the loft,I hope) rather than an uninspiring paper jobbie after 1974.I suppose these days it's a digital copy doodah thing sitting on a cloud up there in cyberspace- no doubt where nobody can find or retrieve them ever again-just like the maritime archives where those of us who remained at sea after 1972 had our details and therefore our existence expunged(lovely word), lost or burnt.Still a very sore point.....it's not nice to not be recorded-oh,was that a double negative?
So....New Year----as per your post title....?
PS .Just received a nice Greetings card from our much missed lady Marian,as I know some of you also will have.
Xmas PC (2).gif Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Graham

Re: New Year.... Did You Know ?
I got a very nice e.mail from Marian and told her she was missed on site by many shipmates. I do not know what went wrong for her not to post anymore, but surely it can be resolved. May I take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Very happy New Year as JP says for us that are housebound being able to swing the lamp is probably the only relaxation we get, so thanks to Brian, Doc and Mike for their hard work on our behalf. #2 When you talk about digital copies Graham I immediately think of corn flake packets and the mass production of what today is supposed to represent a lot of time and effort. Was it all worth it ? Time will prove if it is just a cover up to increase or decrease the present standards. Cheers JS

Re: New Year.... Did You Know ?
#5 what a very nice thing to say about Marian Denis and am sure she appreciates it . She could of course change her name like others and reappear as someone else , But she is above that and would not consider sailing under false colours as is a woman of principle . Pity others didn’t take a page out of her book.We all wish her all the best if haven’t aleady done so , with maybe a few exceptions . You take care yourself over the holiday period , see you next year hopefullly with a whole 12 months ahead . Was speaking on the phone yesterday to Louis the Fly said he was sitting in his rellies , in house in the back garden with a tall glass and the parrots for company in quarantine of course . Forget to ask him if the parrots were wearing face masks. Cheers JS

Very loyal to this site too and got along with so many of us which makes it more of a surprise that she is not allowed to continue posting. I am sure most would welcome her back, life is too short.

Re: New Year.... Did You Know ?
Yes Marian's return would be welcomed by many, many miss her help in tracing long lost relatives, miss her jokes and female intuition, all because a few rufty tufty sailors couldn't handle a woman having strong views and she would not be browbeaten by cyber bullies. Happy Christmas gal!
