    Default RMS Titanic

On channel 4 two nights ago there was "Building the Titanic" using archive footage from the actual time of building that had been coloured. To get the propulsion machinery and boilers into place Harland and Wolff had to purchase a German built crane as none of their cranes had the capacity to lift the heavy steam engines nor the outreach.
The triple expansion steam engines had been built and broken down into manageable portions prior to the hulls launch and were then placed onboard and assembled, the first time they ran was when she departed Belfast the first time. The steam engines drove the two outer propeller shafts, the centre propeller being driven by a parsons steam turbine. The watertight bulkhead doors were also an impressive piece of kit, being capable of being closed remotely even if electric power was lost.
Well worth a watch if you can get it on catch-up.

Currently here in Oz we are currently getting a regular series about Titanic.
Each episode claims to have some new news about her.
But in reality all they show has at some time been shown somewhere before.
It is quite amazing how after so many years she can still make headlines.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

The Titanic had 4 funnels but one was a dummy used as a ventilator shaft for the galley's etc. Why have 4 funnels? Because Cunard, white star's great competitor, all their ships had 4 funnels, so White Star line decided the Titanic and sisters had to have 4 funnels as otherwise passengers would think the White Star lines ships were smaller or lesser well equipped.

Down here in "Mexico' we are having quite a good summer.
Coolest day since end of spring has been about 19 and anywhere from a low of about 23 up to 39.

But looking at the station photo, of course we all look much better when the pic is taken well away from us LOL.
    Happy daze John in Oz.
