Re: Blue flu and memories
#13 That same time standing on deck Ivan, if they wanted to get nasty they would produce someone supposedly the port health and conduct a short arm inspection whilst all lined up. Trying to make you lose face . British crews at one time refused to go there. JS
Re: Blue flu and memories
Michael Black mentions in one of his posts on his father stopping him on his first ship going to China. Michael your father may have been among the numerous seamen who knew things could be better for you elsewhere .Did he ever give you a reason ? JS
Re: Blue flu and memories
John, I suppose he could see what was going on with the red gaurd etc. I wasn't so aware of world politics then. He knew the Blyth pool office quite well, having shipped out of there himself and I think he had a word with the guy in charge.
All turned out well though as I did have a great time on the Kiwi Aussie runs with Shaw Savill
Regards Michael
Re: Blue flu and memories
I remember my old man putting me on the train at Newcastle for the long journey in those days to Avonmouth. Think he was trying to warn me about strange women or something and didn’t make himself clear enough. JS.
Re: Blue flu and memories
The story of the Blue Flu bosun is true, he was half Chinese but 100% scouser who couldn't speak a word of Chinese. He was made to line up with the Chinese crew and recite the thoughts of Chairman Mao from his little red book.
He changed his name to more English sounding one. I won't reveal his names here in case family members read this but will say he was a great guy to sail with and an excellent seaman.
Re: Blue flu and memories

Re: Blue flu and memories
History repeats. A young Roman soldier talking to his mate back in Rome about his trip to England, First time I went there the barswards were lining the beach throwing spears at us, last time they were introducing all these nice girls with long hair, they must be improving their culture, wont be long before we are buying their goods.

Those with long hair may of been blokes Des. Veni Vidi Vici I came, I saw, I conquered, may have a total different meaning , they were cohabitating with the enemy of the wrong sex. JS
