Passenger Ships

the ferry sadly has passed into history in cape town - a swing bridge for pedestrians now links the divide

The Woolwich ferry was one of our fun rides.
Mothers cousin was the Bosun so we got to see parts of the ferry no one else would see.
But it was the smell we liked, the oily smell along with smoke gusts.


But if there was a a problem with normal passenger ships and lights just think how it is now with some cruise ships.

The north shields penny ferry was directly in front of the Jungle, the main ferry was in front of the Crane pub, the free ferry was from Howden to Jarrow ,The photos show the new North Shields ferry ,with the remains of Smiths dock in the back ground, the other shows
three of the drydocks ,it has all been leveled and waiting for a developer.It is sad what has happened to our proud river.

The first pub then. If was built then , would have been the Golden Fleece .and would of had to cross the cobbles to the Jungle , The North Shields Mercantile marine office was going in 1952 and was on the corner next to the Jungle .thats where I got my discharge book , all long gone now. Cheers JS
The bus stop outside the jungle stood there many a time waiting for the bus there were two routes to Whitley Bay one route along the sea front to Blyth via Whitley Bay and one to Whitley Bay via Hill Heads which I used to get when I was 15 and going to South Shields every week day.think it was the number 12. Sometimes got a crowd of girls from Hood Haggies and things could get dangerous . JS

There was a regular ferry from Melbourne to Tassie brought in back about 37 years ago.
The a few years later two ships were brought second hand from Italy to do the job.
Saturday they relocated to Geelong from where they will run on a regular basis.
Two new larger ones are on order for some time next year.

The reason for the move, to give more space at Sation Pier for cruise ships of which some 120 will visit from end of October to middle of May next.

# 14 The Jungle is has now been converted to flats. I served my apprenticeship at the Wallsend slipway which was next door to Hood Haggies , at
lunch time a load of Haggies Angels would use our works canteen , it was great for the lunch time entertainment.

A friend of mine worked at Swans and he reckoned that young lads were very wary about going on the top deck of buses at home time

I heard of a case upstairs in the number 12 bus from the North Shields ferry or Jungle stop . Of a group of girls putting some young fellas thingy ma jig , in a milk bottle empty of course and almost castrating him. I always travelled downstairs . JS.

#16 Colin my father in law worked at Parsons of Wallsend , he was foreman in the gear cutting shop and did most of the turbines . The machinery for such was sent over I think to Rotterdam in the sixties and he had to . Go wth it to see it installed , he died not long afterwards at 66 years of age. Think his trip to Rotterdam was the only time he was ever out of the country . His name was Leslie Dunn., Cheers JS

#18, girls in sugar houses in Greenock would do the same to young lads.
French Polishers in the yards would give it a good coating.
