A regular addition on Bank boats in the Far East in the 70's & 80's. I always remember once, the deckies had forgotten to lock the Deck toilet. Asian squatting methods do not "Line up" with Western toilets. When it was discovered there was a pile 3 foot+ high up the back bulkhead.

    Outside Toilets…
Facilities provided in Swan Hunter shipyard on Tyneside in 50’s and 60’s consisted of long plank on scaffold rigged over the river with holes in and a gutter underneath with a stream of water flowing to remove debris. Seemed OK but the canvas walls were open at the bottom and the wind blew straight in off the North Sea up your Kyber. Suppose it deterred people from lingering.

Cappy one of the funniest things I ever saw with the Thunder Box was after leaving Freetown after dropping the Kroo boys off and heading north a couple of days later the chippy went aft and two swift blows with his very sharp knife the box went and holding onto the rails was a very terrified Nigerian sailor screaming at the chippy Den

The closest I ever came to a Thunderbox was on the 'City of Melbourne' in a Montreal winter and having to break out those infamous 'Elsans' because of frozen pipes. I remember the advice not to be the first to use them as the chemical burned!

I remember on one trip one of the guys coming in to the messroom, dressed only in a towel, giving the poor old peggy a rollicking for using too much harpic in the toilet, and displaying red raw nuts.looked pretty painful.
