Re: Was I a petty officer?
I was a Bosun on the NZ coast for a few trips, but we were called leading hand. If the mate told someone to go see the Bosun they would probably gone up to Ma Gleason's.

#15 you are also a thing of the past ,the same as most on here myself included. You appear to want to bring such friction up seemly as a subject to discuss . By your own. #15 you appear to have spent more time ashore than you did at sea , now that would be an interesting subject , “ How I got my seatime In for up dating of knowledge for certificate continuation” cheers JS

#20.. Good job you didn’t sail with Americans then Keith, didn’t have to be on a ship either, one can’t be blamed for thinking they ar the most polite people on earth as everyone if they don’t know their name appears to be Sir. However is in a different context and not subservient . Cheers JS

Re: Was I a petty officer?
As many of you know, ten years ago I was on deck sailing on the few American flagged merchant ships in operation.
Put in only five years, mostly as AB. The few occasions the Bosun took a few days time off overseas (Thailand)
I would take his place as “Leaderman”. A few bob extra pay. Also in all that time I never saw an officer, Engine or Deck, in uniform … doubt they had one. What we all wore were Company coveralls/overalls. Never a problem as we all knew who we were … maximum crew 20 persons including the Old Man.
Always fun on the bridge when the pilot arrived and always address the oldest looking guy around, whereas the Captain was mostly the youngest person there. The most senior was usually the 2nd Mate as was the easiest job. There wasn’t too much difference between the pay levels to be worth all the grief being Captain.

Was i a Petty Officer! No way Hosay !
As i was told so many times on the Parade Ground by the little Coporal Nimmock!
Cap down to his nose and shouting as loud as can be into your face!
"You are an Orrible little Man, what are you ?"
And you had to answer or else!
" Yes Coporal, i am an Orrible little Man"
What a Guy he was, but for him though we would never have won the Trophy fot that Year!
And to top it all off, he took the Entire Platoon to the Hotel in Bridgnorth and shouted us all a Drink!
Viva Cpl Nimmock! Long live your Memory
Sorry off Limits is this post! Get the Whip out Lads!
Ten of the best, and Shackled at that! LOL
