    My Grandfather served on HMS Rodney. I know from an old letter that he was on it in 1941 and he must have been on it prior to September 1937 because my mother told me when I asked her where my dumb name Rodney came from, she told me my grandfather served on her.

    My dad was in the Royal Army Medical Corp. RAMC, he was not amused when I told him that I was told that RAMC stood for Robbers and Murderers of our Comrades by the other regiments who claimed they lifted watches and rings and anything that sparkled from the dead and wounded.

    Cheers, Rodney

    My father Walter Kenneth Walker (Ken) joined the Merchant Navy and sailed on 25 Mar 1939 on Duchess of Bedford as a Bellboy - he was 14 years 5 months. Just 6 months before WWII. He sailed across the Atlantic on 20 return journeys throughout WWII. Ken went on 2 convoy trips to Arkangel and Murmask, Russia- but they were not allowed to disembark whilst there, as the Russians didn't trust anyone - even though they were taking supplies to Russia. The supplies were running short in late 1941 - as supplies lines were cut off by the German Army. He continued with Merchant Navy until July 1955.

    Hi Peter,

    My grandfather was 3rd Officer on the Accrington and won a MBE for bravery at sea. He would have known your father in lS no doubt. I am trying to track down the ships records to find out a bit more. You sound like you have managed to access them - do you have any tips for someone starting out? Thanks, James

    Hello James If you go to the following Link, you will see there is a Ships Movement for the Ship Accrington 1939 to 1945.
    This available Free , however you must Join the National Archives to obtain it free, otherwise you will have to pay the 3.50 GBP

    So hope this may help i your quest~
    Cheers

    #27 . If trying to trace your grandfather you should try initially the Chancellory and request all info. They may have. Also St. Paul’s Cathedral believe they have a chapel dedicated to members of the British Empire and may keep a file on all members past and present. The medal itself is not returnable to the Palace and if you now own can wear it on your right breast. It is on the recipient on receiving such medal initially that they communicate their permanent location whilst alive to the Chancellory. If you want their address i can give you, assuming they haven’t shifted house in the past 33 years. Best of luck tracing your tree. JS

    Hello James,
    Your g/father is listed in Arnold Hague's book as 3rd officer Mr C. Draper. M.B.E. along with the Chief Steward Mr C. Murphy; AB Mr EB Thompson;
    AB Mr J McIntyre and Donkeyman Mr J Forrester who were all awarded the B.E.M..
    The Master, Chief Officer, 2nd Engineer, HF/DF Operator and 2x A.B.s also received a Commendation. No bad for a little ship !!

    Have a look at the earlier posts re; the relevant books which should be a great help to you.
