Port Transport

Hi

One of my ancestors in 1827 is a Ports Transport. does this mean he is on longer on a ship and working at a port? Sorry if this is a question that sounds a bit silly.

Linda I guess not silly but very confusing!
I myself do not know what that would mean, the only connection i see in that era (1827) is that it could point to Transport of Convicts mainly to Australia!
So wether he was some sort of Official on this type of Ship, or if indeed he was one of te poor Convicts sent to Australia!
Pure guessing here though!
Hope there may be some better explanations coming !

If you can post His Full name, place and possible DOB , this would help to see if there are any records at all!

By what I have read over the years in a varied book experience , both fiction and supposedly non fiction , the convicts when sent to the likes of Australia were accompanied by troopers of whatever military designation. A lot of these troopers or army personel were landed with the convicts and stayed to colonise the country , could this not be a confusing name like Port transport officer . ? JS

Of course Linda it could also point to as said Transport Officer, which in those days mainly saw to the Handling of the Passenger Baggage , from Ship to a certain point , and also the Transportation of the Higher Class Passengers from Ship to either place of residence or wherever?

Again this is all just a guess , will only know once we can establish his name Place and DOB, and if there may be some Records for him somewhere!

Could be something completely different !
