#1 The Arisaig was an ore carrier and was on BISCO charter which has been discussed already . Many ships went to Murmansk , I did 3 in a row at one time. Russia in wintertime is cold , gets down to minus 32 and even lower at times . However the Russians keep it ice clear all year round and is about the only port they have as such . It is their biggest submarine base for this reason . There are others on site who will have been on the Arisaig but as far as I know she was a basic ore carrier, if remember correctly from the ore carrier radio schedule she was one of the smaller ones built for Port Talbot discharge of most cargoes . My wife had a fur coat in those days and I bought her a matching fur hat in the duty free and open only to foreigners shop it was cheap. Also their cheap items were shot guns if had a shot gun licence for getting through UK customs, and tins of caviar, also of course Vodka. But otherwise a very austere country up there. Think there was also a 2200 hr. Curfew . JS

In 78, passing thro Moscow airport, my wife tried on a fur coat in the duty free, very cheap, but decided against it when she realised it was liftin with fleas.

My wife gave up the fur coat which was bought. In the UK from a bit of money an Aunt left her in a will. But shortly after all the preamble of cruelty to animals so she had it made into teddy bears. For the kids and their friends . What about all the shark skin suits we had made in the Far East. ? They never got round to that one. Cheers JS

#8 Thomas have you ever asked him what type of anchor he swallowed ? e.g. Admiralty Pattern , Bruce Anchor , stream anchor , or just a big 20 ton Rig anchor is my guess . He always liked big things even in his women come blokes. Cheers JS
