    Default Gyms on ships

Currently I'm a student at a maritime school, soon i will leave for 6 months to be a cadet onboard a random ship, and I was just wondering how many of ships nowadays have proper gyms

My very last ship before redundancy beckoned in 1990 was a 200,000 tonne dwt bulk/ore carrier which was built in 1986 had a gym and a table tennis room for use of all officers and crew. Then,as now , gymnasiums and I don't get on Weights.gif but after watch I often enjoyed a good game of 'wiff waff' with other off-duty crew.

No shortage of table tennis balls on navy ships , they come in all sizes some as big as your head, as the song goes, they are usually found in all void spaces and are just there to keep the ship afloat hopefully if holed. I have sailed with a lot of Jims but find to day there are more Jeans. If have choice I prefer the Just Jeans variety .JS Dont think anyone is going to ask what is wiff waff.

I sailed on three ships with gyms, I didnt ever see anyone using them as after watch there were more important things to do, like sleeping, eating or having a beer. Not much energy left after work which kept most of us in shape anyway.

#1.. Mantas I assume you are probably between the ages of 16 and 26 by today’s standards of recruitment and your instructors or lecturers or mentors whatever today is their title will more than likely, are probably middle aged if not younger ,so probably more than likely their own experiences is a strong likelihood of their own sea experiences are after 2000. Unless someone now at sea answers you , you are very likely to get replies irreverlent to your question. If I had asked that question when I first went to sea , it would of been followed by howls of laughter by any byestander and probably a chIpping hammer handed to you . However most on this site live in a different world of years gone by , so unless a present day seafarer answers your question , you are going to get a rare mixture of answers . Wish you well on your future career. Cheers JS....

"Oh Ar,Gym Lad (Jim Lad ? ")). We certainly did-and still do !
Remember the story of that first trip Cadet at his first ever shipboard Fire Drill? On being told to let off a Fire Extinguisher to test it,he did so on deck spraying everyone within sight."No,no! over the side ! shouted the Bosun,So,to a stunned gathering, the lad dutifully tossed the extinguisher over the side and into the deep blue yonder....
