How well I remember Hamberg Hafen one of the first foreign ports I visited back in 1959. I can still smell the cigar smoke in the bars of St Pauli, and Lolita singing ‘Seemann, deine Heimat ist das Meer’ in the background. At just 16 years of age, I was too young to appreciate the sinful mile, nevertheless, I grew to love Germany, how they rebuilt Hamburg which had been flattened by the RAF and USAF. The only thing they seemed to be short of in 1959/1960 was real coffee for some reason. When my daughter lived in Celle with the British Army, I tried to recapture memories of my youth in the bars and restaurants of Bremen Hafen, of course, that is impossible, German bars are mainly smoke-free now and Lolita has been replaced by Nena.

Herbetstrauss, Winklestrauss, - a German version, always a good run ashore down the Reeperbahn.
