The only sailing ships I can remember being on were the Cutty Sark, HMS Victory Both In drydock and open to the public. The Winston Churchill and the Leuwin Both working ships , these were all the originals . The number of times I’ve walked past the Victory on my way to the gate , and I only paid one visit to. They must have been very short men in Nelson’s time ,as Im not tall but had to duck my head all the time when in the accomodation , maybe why I only made the one visit. It would have been the blind leading the blind if Ivan and me went on board together and could patch our heads up on completion of the inspection. It’s where height was decidedly dangerous Ivan ,although you probably found out for yourself if visited and would be pleased you weren’t 6 ft. tall . JS

john i have been in some roughouses like most on here ....but bettys bar ladies were the roughest bunch i ever came across world wide ....the glasgow cops had about 15 or more invarious states of undress to naked ....dragged from cabins into a dead end alley way .....they were like banshees hurling themselves at the coppers....punching biting scratchin kicking .....no class like the kiwi birds or ozzie birds .....or our more gentle ladies from shields .....except brians ladies in whitley bay .......R683532

Think I already put a post up about some time ago . We had a stowaway on board from same I say stowaway but maybe she just slept in . Fortuanetley we were just going to Liverpool from General Terminus so put her in the pilots cabin on the Bridge , the Beechwood was I believe the old Aldersgate . She was good company on watch and made up for the reduced manpower acting as lookout. A good enough excuse if needed one. The police took her off in Liverpool and put her back on a train for Glasgow. Pleased we didn’t have Prince Andrew on board JS.

Shields gentle ladies? In 93/94 I was tasked to go on board the Big Orange 11? a well regeneration vessel, in Montrose. I was sent to inspect issues with the hydrochloric acid tanks. During a general chat with some of the guys I mentioned that I had seen the vessel in Middle Docks for quite a long time; they told me they had just come out, and had a whale of a time in Shields except for for one guy who had a massive black eye and broken nose. Apparently they had gone to a nightclub and as they walked in a young lady standing in a crowd near the door had her a-se felt by someone, unfortunately for this guy (he was totally innocent) was the first face she saw and instantly stuck the nut on him. He complained that he wouldn't have minded as much if it had been him.

Yes I remember testing the height of the deckheads on a number of occasions, I was a slow learner. I found my challenging lofftiness very useful when doing reverse turns when inspecting double bottoms (make of that what you will!)

#15.. I’m almost sure the Beechwood was the old Aldersgate Cappy. I have a memory of all the stability paperwork having the original ship crossed out and Beechwood in its place. I’m talking about 1972 just after I came back into British shipping in fact it was the first ship I joined in John I Jacobs , joined her in Middlesbrough as well . Cheers JS
