You are no longer required to carry paper charts, if you have an approved (Flag approved) ECDIS & back up.
There are three options (which will be clearly indicated in your Cargo Ship Safety Equipment certificate annexe)
1-Paper Charts
2-ECDIS, with a back up ECDIS
3-ECDIS, with a paper chart back up.
I do not know how much such gear is, but paper charts are now about £60 each.
One of the advantages of ECDIs, is you "rent the required charts" for when you need them. Whichever, its still quite costly.
