    Default Convoy tales from my father

    Although my dad, James R Penny, was an American Merchant Marine, his ships were in many Convoys. And of course, there were many British ship there. I'm still trying to determine the full history of each of his ships.

    But, thought ya'll may like some of the recollections that he passed on to me.

    He was in the Convoys to Murmansk, Russia and said that the German planes hit them hard. On one occassion, his ship was a little out of position and a German came over and dropped bombs all in a row. He said if they had been where they were supposed to be, then his ship would have been hit. There was a Tanker carrying Aviation Fuel on the next column and a bomb hit it. Dad said that there was just a big boom and everything was gone. Nothing was left.

    p.s. He said that the Russian dock workers were all women and were big and strong and looked more like men!

    Note: His ships were all American. (J.H.Tuttle, Robert Battey, Clement Clay, Seven Pines, F.A.C. Muhlenberg, Ethan Allen, and the Winston-Salem. The Winston-Salem was in Convoy PQ-17 but dad was not onboard then.

    Yes James there were many British ships in the convoys! 2500 vessels were sunk and 35,000 British seamen killed.

    There are many expert volunteers on here who give their time freely and now they have the names of the ships can possibly help, but do not the American Authorities/Associations not keep a record of their vessels records and activities, US Coastguard for instance, or The Merchant Mariners Unions, try gcaptain.com they may be able to guide you on course.

    I sailed on 'Empire Lionel' (PQ16) later on when she was renamed 'Levenpool' three happy trips, then a change of Master, happy became nightmare, and all hands except C/E paid off on return to Burntisland. All part of the learning curve

    Ivan,you know me by now,someone has only got to mention a ship name and I'm off to look it up,either in my databases or online.
    Well ,apart from her interesting history which I have compiled an INFOLINK for,I recorded a snippet about the same vessel when she was later renamed NEWLANE,in which the CIA (allegedly-I have to say that because they may still be after me ! ).were involved in,re the Cuban missile crisis back in 1962.



    The NEWLANE ex Levenpool ,was nominally owned by Trafalgar SS Co Ltd,London (Tsavliris Sg.Co.Ltd,London) from 1962. She went on,under the Cyprian (Famagusta) flag until 10/69 when she was scrapped at Chittagong.

    1960 Seventy-five people were killed and 200 injured when 76 tonnes of Belgian ordnance exploded in the port area of Havana as the French freighter LA COUBRE was being unloaded. The cargo had possibly been booby-trapped when loaded in Antwerp.

    1962 CIA agents poisoned 14,135 bags of Cuban sugar bound for the Soviet Union aboard the British ship STREATHAM HILL. The attack was discovered when children in Puerto Rico fell ill after tasting pilfered sugar that had been temporarily stored in a US customs warehouse. President Kennedy, fearing the consequences of adulterated sugar reaching Russian consumers, prevented the cargo leaving Puerto Rico.

    The Government of Cuba, accused the United States with having responsibility for the attack on the Cuba-bound Spanish freighter SIERRA DE ARANZAZU.
    An Armed Forces Ministry statement said the U.S. “knows perfectly well who carried out this attack since the authors were mercenary elements equipped, paid, and directed by the Central Intelligence Agency.”
    The U.S. was “trying to wash its hands” of the incident because of the deaths of three Spaniards in the attack.

    1964 m.v.MAGDEBURG, a communist East German freighter loaded with British buses for Cuba, was sunk in collision with YAMASHIRO MARU, inaccurately described in newspapers and on television as ‘an accident in thick fog’. Lloyd’s List reported: ‘Fifty-six East Germans including three girls were picked up after the motor vessel Magdeburg was badly holed in a collision in thick fog off Broadness Point early today’.1965 Nine months after the collision, NYK Line had still failed to answer any letters from the insurers of the Magdeburg. Representing the British pilots, Trinity House could not say whether they would ever hold an investigation into the collision. 1993, the British television reporter Simon Neave interviewed the British pilot of the Magdeburg a communist East German who revealed for the first time in Britain that there had been no fog at the time of the collision. The pilot of the YAMASHIRO MARU refused to speak to him.
    2001 David Osler of Lloyd’s List reported: ‘The only present NYK employee in Britain who was working for the company in 1964 declined to comment on the matter, referring queries to Tokyo.2008 Captain Toshio Nozaki, Deputy Director of the NYK Maritime Museum in Yokohama, said certain NYK Line records of the collision are held at the museum subject to ‘secret handling’.
    2008 East German Seekammer marine court files on the collision were found at the University of Greifswald. The Seekammer had concluded that that Yamashiro Maru sounded a misleading whistle signal before the collision.The court had taken written evidence from radar observers on the West German ship Spreestein and the Royal Mail vessel Paraguay and from the two pilots. The court concluded: ‘The command of Yamashiro Maru had, by using the wrong side of the waterway, infringed Article 25 KVR/60 of the River Thames shipping regulations. The vessel was sailing on the wrong side of the river for inward bound ships and was giving the command of Magdeburg the wrong impression by signalling intentions to change course which were then not carried out.’NYK refused to communicate. When the Seekammer files were opened, their pilot Captain Gerald Johnson was found to have limited his description of the collision to the following inaccurate sentence: ‘The YamashiroMaru was entering port on the high tide. Near Broadness the outward bound Magdeburg was crossing the bow of Yamashiro Maru from the left when the latter collided amidships on its starboard side.’

    The above Thames incident refers to an actual collision which some sources allege was ‘contrived’ by the CIA, Contrived,due to the secrecy surrounding the subsequent enquiries by the various national authorities. The Americans were known to be annoyed that Britain was ignoring calls to stop trading with Cuba.





    1968 Dr Orlando Bosch of the CIA-supported MIRR movement was sentenced to 10 years jail by a US federal court for attacking a Polish freighter in the Port of Miami with an anti-tank M18 57 mm recoilless rifle.


    May 1968 MIRR or El Fodor Cubano members was also accused by Cuba of placing a bomb on the British freighter GREENWOOD of France,Fenwick Company, extensively damaged 25 miles from Key West.

    My memories of Cuba during those times , the incidents recorded are probably factual , with many more with different aspects. I can remember the interrogations if one wants to call them that , by men in suits before transiting the Panama Canal en route from Cuba during those times and also being shadowed by a US submarine as formerly stated . You can’t expect anything less when a country is under a blockade . As regards the poisoning of the sugar , think of the present day affliction and what may come to light in 30 years time ,for those who will be around and can remember. The world is a tinderbox and has been for a long time , it doesn’t have to have climate change to ignite it man will do that himself , there are plenty of arsonists around. JS

    Nice to sail on a ship with a little bit of history, alas not all good, on one trip (not during my tenure) a body was found in the Aft Peak FW tank, how nobody fell ill gawd only knows. The body was discovered when the tank was opened up for an annual cement wash. Apparently a young shore man had gone missing during a dry dock. It must have been terrifying for him, as most of us who have done tank inspections are always afraid that some silly barsteward will come and batten down the manhole whilst you're in there, and you may be in a DB at the far end and impossible to turn round and shouting doesn't work especially if riveting was going on close by. The 'standby man' was usually called away by the Mate to do another job, as he wasn't going to pay someone for just standing around!! I always used to leave a heaving line hanging down the manhole then some well meaning sod would say to himself this belongs on the poop or foc'le and start coiling it up out the manhole; you couldn't attach it to yourself as it would snag on various frames and knees (for land persons knee is a steel bracket)

    John,this is what I came up with.LINK .This was FERNMOOR (3rd) of 1936. Others were (1st )1894,sunk by U Boat in April 1917; (2nd )1922,wrecked off Newfoundland 1933;(4th) 1971 ex Streambank built 1958.Sold onwards 73,scrapped 83.

    Somewhere in my memories the last Fernmoor was lost on the London Reef In 1954 as I was on another company’s ship at the time. Previous to the loss she had been towed from the same area by one of the well known liner company’s and the master of the towing vessel had received various plaudits. Thought this may have come up in the link. There was no loss of life when she finally was lost. I have two newspaper cuttings of the at time , of 2 welsh survivors one of whom I sailed with not too long after , the other was the R/0. The 2 mate the other one went on to become a Barrier Reef pilot , he must be dead by now as was a number of years older than me. But you never know . Thanks your reply. JS.
