STEEPHOLM (ON 183680) was a steam turbine sand suction dredger ("Sand Sucker",owned by Holms Sand & Gravel Co;Ltd,Bristol.Built by Charles Hill & Sons of Bristol in 1950.Fate;wrecked Tuskar Rock 2.10.68 [Barry-Swansea, sand]
[from a Lloyds Report; While proceeding from Bristol Channel dredging operations off Barry to Swansea with her full load of sand the British steam sand suction dredger Steepholm ran aground on Tuskar Rock off Porthcawl ,during the late evening of October 2nd,1968.
In view of the seriousness of the situation the master and his six crew were taken off by the Mumbles lifeboat and landed at Swansea. The wreck was looted by local boatmen who stripped the vessel of her valuable copper and brass fittings before any salvage attempts could be made.Despite batterings from heavy seas ,buffeting by strong winds and attempts to refloat her the Steepholm remained stuck hard and fast on the Rock.At low tide she was left high and dry ,while at high tide only the funnel was visible .The wreck broke up during the winter storms.]
