Default Maybe funny, maybe not .

Whenever Deep Sea puts a report in about youngsters at sea during the war , it shows the depths he actually goes to in the exemplary work he does. Also in all the other spheres he works at.
However going to the youngsters , I knew one who survived the war and I may have mentioned before . Think Albert from North Shields May have known him . I met Albert a few times when over in the UK for socialising but don’t think his name was ever mentioned , I may of intended to , but maybe the pint glass got in the way . Haven’t seen Albert posting for some time so hope he is ok.
Anyhow name of subject Bob Storey and think he belonged to the seafaring family from South Shields, he relieved me as mate in Smith’s Drydock North Shields 64/65 on the Warkworth. Shortly after believe he went master of same vessel . If memory correct we walked 50 yards out the bottom gate to the Jungle where it was a bit more quieter and the view a bit better of the barmaids legs for discussing any discrepancy’s the ship had , every ship has them. We got on talking and was telling me his father was a master at sea during the war , Bob himself absconded at 15 to joining the MN as a deck boy unknown to his father who was away at sea. On a Halifax convoy when they reached the sphere of the U-boat influence 3 ships were torpedoed his being one of them and he finished up swimming. There were other boats in the water from the other two ships and he was dragged into one of them . He came back to sanity on opening his eyes to his father cuffing his ears and shouting at him what he was doing there. Neither knew of the existence of the other in the same convoy. Whenever Over the years I have felt depressed I visualise that scene and can understand the humiliation he must have felt to be getting admonished in the middle of the night in the middle of the North Atlantic in front of some of whom would have been his shipmates . He was one 15 year old who didn’t die and lived to tell the tale his own way , and laugh at it at the same time. Don’t know but suspect he is no longer with us mores the pity. Cheers JS

Another story in the life of the MN at war, anyone with imagination would get a laugh out of that. Thanks john.
