Re: No crew on board
No way if you’ve ever seen a Ships budget for HM inspector of taxes you would see different,
crews food and Lodgings plus wages were the minimal in any costing for a ship. JS.

Re: No crew on board
Those crewless electronic driven ships will still most likely have a conventional propellor on a shaft connected to an electric motor using a simplex mechanical seal for the stern gland, which leads to the question of how to monitor the stern tube lubrication, normally mineral oil.
Even if azipods are used for propulsion and steering there are a number of problems to overcome such as the decrease in under keel clearance for ships trading in shallow waters, cost and also even with sailors there is still fitted a seal where the sailor rotates about its mounting to give directional force.

Re: No crew on board
Most of the new generation cruise ships will run on gas, small generators to produce enough electric power for all systems on board including propulsion.
But a crewless ship directed from ashore is quite possible.
Here in Melbourne we haver one dock where the cranes are operated from somewhere in Cambodia as it is cheaper.
Guy sits a ta consol and manages the cranes from there.
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: No crew on board
Even the Starship Enterprise was manned. A dozy looking lot but manned never the less. Or was that the Klingons we used to call them crabs. Cappy reckons they were green as well . JS

Re: No crew on board
Sci-Fi and Hi-Fi, how close those two words sound , but the Fi in both couldn’t be more apart if tried . 0ne is fiction and the other Fidelity. One could nearly say similar for Infi. For infinity and the same for infidelity. Can’t really follow the reasoning for cargo. One thing for sure though, will certainly have no need for plimsol marks. Cheers JS
