Served with L+H on the Rubens in 1964, UK to Brazil and back as galley boy. Had a bet with one of the engine room boys about working in the galley with oil fired stove, I cannot remember the temperature but I recall winning hands down. Sitting on the top deck next to the spud Locker with buckets of badly peeled spuds. Wearing next to nothing was daily routine.

    Hi Keith.
The BTC had specially made wind scoops, didn't stop a wave squashing one in my port , hell of a struggle to get it out all the while being soaked by sea water.
PS, long time since you posted I was asking about you the other week, hope everything on the island is OK.

#9... Not a very much frequenter to the Persian Gulf , but do remember Bandur Mashur going back to 1973. If the same port was in Iran and to get to was a jeep ride over the desert . Loaded 2 cargoes there of Naptha for Japan , assume it was for American interests in their problems in the Far East at the time. Also left ship there after the second run to Japan is how I know about the desert travel to civilization , getting out of Iran and a flight to Newcastle NSW via Sydney was another problem. And another bigger problem at the time. JS.

To Keith Tindell, flit guns (beer can size canister with small nozzle affixed to a pump (similar to a bicycle pump, same action). I am fairly sure we used DDT in the early 1950’s. It is a wonder we have survived all these years ! Thanks for the reminder as i had forgotten about them. Keith Adams
