Tthis is getting unbelievable doc as the ARRANMORE was of course the original vindicatrix which many on our site trained on in the dates you have found she was of course a fully rigged sailing vessel mainly on the grain run ......he also sailed in two of runcimans which i also sailed in some40 or so years later .....this is so interesting so the sailing vessel made to heave to then sunk BY A U BOAT sounds a probability OR POSSIBILITY ...thanks for your input cant wait to show my kids and grankids......thanks doc and marion you have certainly passed all i could have expected .....and to now no that my gran was in the gaurdians i guess after her father died at sea make me understand how she loved her family so strongly and myself was so kind and good to......

i do know that erling had a pension from the norwegian government also for something to do with service in norwegian vessels ... heard ettie mention it of which in those days a pension was a great asset in life no matter how small......i must say this revealing of this has really blown my mind ...as they were just happenings around me as i grew up ...lived with my gran for a few years she surely spoilt meand ettie who had no children did the same happy days...and thanks to doc and dear marion once again...cappy

Well cappy i have looked at the posts again and i may have been incorrect on other Ships, as of what we have he seems to have been around 26/27 when signing on the Ships listed. This then would mean that he could well have been on other Norwegian Ships or Ship prior to that! ?
Not saying for sure but again something to look into!
    Cheers

    Keep looking Marian who knows!

Just of Interest at this time cappy.
The district Erling was from in Norway looks like Vestfold so the best bet is to write to the one nearest that, if you ae of course interested to try and see if he was on some other Ships/Ship ?
    Cheers

    Researching Mariners in Norwegian Archives

Letters from the National Archives of Norway.
    SEAMEN'S RECORDS
Our register of seamen from the Government Directorate for Seamen is the first central register of seamen in Norway.
In Norway, the seamen mustered on/off at the local seamens' offices. They were closed down in 1988, and they sent their records to the National State Archives. There are eight Regional State Archives in Norway.
Therefore, in order to find a seaman before the war, you need to know where he was domiciled at that time.

#21 nah that was Cappy when he was doing his steering certificate Des. The beauty of being on such a ship is the silence of any man made noise apart of course from someone being seasick. The short time I did as a volunteer on the Leeuin a 3 masted barquentine out of Fremantle with a bunch of kids was a wonderful experience to me as well as the kids, but I didn’t let on to them. On any power driven vessel there is noise no matter how quite you think they are , and is only when you go under sail alone you realize how tranquil the world can be. You feel like floating on air ,no vibrations from machinery just the occasional creak of timber. Cheers JS
