So was not unusual to. see one with a chipping hammer in one hand , a scraper in the other ,and a paint brush between his teeth, and if no one available for sweeping up a long handled broom stuck you know where, and if working Round the bridge area and the visibly shutting down told to keep his eyes and ears open for any nosy visitors. #50 Keeping to the subject of Royal Yachts and Alex’s report from Downing Street #48 Des, apparently a tinny would now be adequate , the only argument. Is for the British parliament to rule on a 5 or 10 hp evinrude , preferably not made in China. Not that I have anything against Chinese products apart from the material especially in the shirts as they are always marked as bigger than what they actually are. Is very hard to make out where they are made as have to break open the cellophane to find. Are you still going around in masks like the Lone Ranger . Cheers JS.....

As to dress wear here in Oz it depends on the place and the season.
If I am visiting the Alice I will wear my cultural clothes, shorts and Tee shirt with some nice writing on it.

But when home it is shorts and tee shirt with no writing on it.
But during the cooler months resort to some form of shoes to give the sandels a rest.
Or as a neighbor call them Jesus shoes, not quite sure what she means?

John do you find in the warmer months if you wear sandals most of the time, come winter and the shoes come out again that you feet have spread and shoes seem tighter fit.
I hope when Boris gets his Prime ministerial / Presidential yacht and visits the former Prison colony. if you do get an invite aboard that you do wear deck shoes. Could you dig out your old UCL wingers uniform and lead a hand with high teas. I am sure as a travelling companion Lord Prescott will be able to lend a hand if required.

i always used to think leaving certain old-fashioned gents toilets that the exhortation to 'Please Adjust Your Dress before Leaving' only applied to the drag queens in the Danny La Rue Showcase Lounge in the same building,but I gave a little downward tug just to make sure my 'trolleys' weren't rucked up outside my trousers and displaying the Fruit of the Loom label. Mention of Danny La Rue I sailed with a Chief Steward a friend of his. The two of them were officers batsmen during the war, not the Batman and Robin type. What regiment would that of been one wonders maybe the RASC ? I’m not too familiar with the general layout of the army, anyhow they were both in the stage show soldiers in skirts after the war at the Newcastle Empire in Newcastle that’s where I believe they made their debut. Danny went on to fame and fortune and Reggie finished up as chief steward with a well known tanker company. A very nice bloke all things considered . However I did notice in his discharge book it had been doctored to knock off at least 10 years of his age. He had photos of his pal and himself when in show business and would put some of the Boogie Street residents to shame. However as said he never bothered anyone and kept his own department in line who also had his same nature all except the cook who used to keep his sanity by having a few beers with me when I came off watch at 2000. He had the same surname as Capt.Kong that’s why I have invariably asked Brian if he was any relation ,but he vehemently denies , not that there is any shame to it ,as this one was harmless. And anyhow it is now illegal to cast aspersions on our fellow man and woman. Life at sea was very varied with some of the characters one met wasn’t it ?

I have never wore open-toed 'jerusalem cruisers,',not even in this country, ever since one traumatic late afternoon in 1970-odd ,while walking down a sandy port road in Mauretania to the Seaman's Mish ,and kicked an unseen ,sand-covered rather large scorpion into touch...So close.I came back by taxi and that was nothing to do with the bottles of lager I'd consumed !
