    Default number of crew

Just wondered what number crew there would have been on ships dad sailed on during 1947-1973

He was on all sorts of ships so I'm sure it varied a lot.

    Thank you

Be nice to know what roles they all played from skipper to able seaman...?

(AA) How long is a piece of string

Coasters anything from 3 to 20
    Trawlers 5 to 22
Cargo ships without passengers 40 to 60
Cargo ships with passengers, again a piece of string as depending on number required changed not only crew requirements, but involved lifeboat capacity, Life saving appliances, fire fighting requirements. If carrying more than 12 passengers then a doctor had to be required.

Passenger Liners anything from 100 to 600+

(BB) Much has already been written on here, as it takes an average of 8 -10 years to gain a Master Foreign Going Certificate of Competency, there are numerous books (Volumes) on the duty of a Ship Master, too detailed to even start on here, as I'm already in my 80's doubt I would have time left to write it all!!

Just as an addition to #2

Business and Law for the ShipMaster runs to 928 pages

Nicholls Concise Guide to Navigation Vols I & II will run to another 700 pages

Lets not forget Ship Construction. Ship Stability, Nicholls Seamanship, there's another 1500 pages, lets not forget the Ship Captains Medical Guide and examinations, Fire Fighting on Ships, the list is endless, not forgetting the Boatswains Manual, Handy guide to Stowage 200 pages, Browns Pocket Book, and on top of all this you have ship management and ship handling. All available on the internet, some are not cheap
