    Default Mystic

Just going through Dads books in 1970

Engaged ship in New York 28 April 1970
    Discharge Belfast 23 July 1970

Just wondered how he would have got to New York?

Also why he was discharged in Belfast when he lived near Liverpool which was the next port of call.

If anybody knows anything about this ship it would be great.

    thank you
    Bob

The Articles of Agreement stipulated that the first port of discharge in the UK or near continental ports was the port where the agreement was broken and the crew paid off. After that new Articles be they foreign going or home trade would have to be opened. There are various reasons why he may have joined in N.Y. , maybe missed his previous ship, paid off sick, jumped ship .Does his discharge book give you no clues to this ? Or may of even have been sent there to join. Cheers JS.

From 1966 to 1971 every ship I joined was a fly out job. Mind they were all foreign flag. But even the UK ships had its fair share. Was common practice in a lot of cases depending on the trade of the ship. JS.

It could be a replacement for someone who jumped ship or was paid off sick. Had replacements flown out to Australia when so many jumped ship on the Port Montreal.

#5... Even in the late 1950s . The company I worked for used to do full crew changes in Rotterdam from Newcastle , which at the time was a shed in a field , by a chartered WW 11 Dakota. Given many the excuse for getting Dutch Courage predatory for the flight and spewing it all back later. JS
