Most ships of our time along with many buildings ashore had Asbestos some where in them.
Now totally outlawed in civilized countries as it can when in a dust form cause incurable damage to the lungs.

And yet you are still with us Collin ! Perhaps you have good defensive genes. Think most of we ex seafarers must have, as every one of us has climbed or crawled over cargoes of what are now determined to be hazardous materials. Sampling or reading thermometers or the like. Or lifted many a tank manhole for a sniff or sounding and reeled backward by the erupting smell. Think that is the source of my cancers that have revealed themselves in recent years.

Two seamen who did their training with me died of asbestosis, I was lucky enough to help one get a pay out, when they challenged him to say where there was asbestos that a seaman would have been in contact with. I put in an affidavit to effect that all the winches on some ships had their pipes lagged with it, he got his payment late as it was.

Asbestos became increasingly widespread during the mid-1700s, primarily in ships, locomotives and power plants. Since 1899, asbestos has become known to pose a number of dangers – but not until 1999 when the UK made it illegal to possess all types of asbestos. Nice to know that employers always had our best interests at heart.

Interesting thread. I can remember in Quebec, loading raw asbestos in bags. It was all floating in the air for everyone to breath in. I often wondered if anyone suffered from it? I think there was a town called Asbestos in Quebec.
