Dis they not experiment with cargo sailing ships some years ago ? i seem to recall a cargo ship with the Walker windsail system, a vaned rotating system, largely automatic. If my memory is correct, i wonder what became of it?. kt

If you think about it eventually humans will have to start moving backwards. As natural resources run out we will have to revert to other forms of power. No oil left, defiantly no aircraft flying, sailing ships run by wind and solar power, horse instead of horsepower. Our only possible saviour would be hydrogen fuel as we would still hopefully have an abundance of water. Food for thought.

I am not sure about the abundance of water. The UK seems to manage to run out of water every summer :-(

No worries there, according to one 'expert' the world will run out of oxygen in about a couple of million years.

There is a small but growing movement in the uk of sail cargo vessels. Most do not really make any profit sadly as the cargo capacity of the vessels is too small. New Dawn Traders https://www.newdawntraders.com/ is an alliance in the uk. There is a sailing vessel Kwai that works in the Pacific that is big enough to make profit Sailing Vessel Kwai - Sailing Vessel Kwai she seems to be an old North sea beam trawler with a 250 ton cargo capacity rigged as a large Ketch. https://brigantes.eu/en/ is working out of Porto and there is the famous Tres Hombres https://fairtransport.eu/tres-hombres/ with a 35 ton cargo capacity is rigged as a top sail schooner. SV Ceiba is being built from locally sourced wood in Costa Rica she will be a top sail schooner with a 200 ton cargo capacity https://www.sailcargo.inc/
I am very interested in doing this myself and am currently looking for a suitable MFV coming out of service that can be rigged as a Chinese junk which is similar to the old Herring drifters lug rig but with a fully battened sail ( cannot afford a beam trawler sadly) Basically a vessel with suitable dead drop on the keel to provide lateral resistance to the rig would be suitable for conversion. If any one is also interested in this type of project let me know I will be looking to set up a workers co op to run the vessel.

There were in the 1980s , I would imagine quite a few working in the North Sea suitable , as engine wise they were clapped out , but were being utilised as safety vessels in the oil industry. One of the few I was on was completely kaput re engine and was sold for 80,000 pounds , it would of been a buyers market then , would of thought there were still many of these vessels lying up some creek rusting away going extremely cheap and would be doing their owners a favour for taken them off their hands. Best of luck in your enterprise. JS.
There was one Norwegian ex f/v I was on which to conserve fuel and the use of the main engine , we would shut down , she had been modified to have a drop thruster through the keel and maintained her position with that. I would assume the thruster could have been replaced with a drop keel to keep the expense of refitting down to a mininum. There were during my time many vessels which now must be defunct which could be purchased for scrap value. Cheers JS

Walker Wing Sail had their computer sail on a cargo ship, the ASHINGTON.
very successful, a good speed and no matter which direction the wind came from
    also on many yachts.

a bunch of american gangsters took over the company and put it into liquidation
Mrs Walker, Company Secretary Committed Suicide over it.
I lost 3,500 shares in it.
