The Ashington was one of Stevie Clark's. She was a regular visitor to Blyth, saw her a few times at the west staithes. Quite a sight when seeing her for the first time.

#14. There are 11 men in that boat Des , a full crew for a modern day large Ocean going vessel. Who knows they may even be. On their way to one of the Red Sea ports to join such, either that or illegal immigrants .JS

Judging by the number of illegals crossing from France to UK it would appear they still work.

But in our days such boats when in the Canal came too close I was amazed at how a hot water hose could wash them away.
Maybe it was the only way they got a decent wash.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

#7.. Stephen if you are still looking for suitable vessels , the ex Norwegian one I mentioned may be a suitable vessel. I am talking back to 1990 now . She was run by Seaboard Offshore Marine , which is now defunct and bought out by the Americans I believe. Her name was at that time the Seaboard Castor o.n.714173 nrt 154 grt397
Approx, as I had no official ships stamp for her so was what I picked up off other documents . If you have the time and the inclination you may be able to follow up the history of this ship on the internet to see if she is still in existance and her availability . She was in 1990 one of the better ones. Don’t be put off by the low tonnages they are deceiving. They are only cubic measurements as you know , her deadweight will be much larger . Another place to look for old Tonnage May also be on the Internet will be Star Offshore who had/ has a large fleet of fishing vessels. You may have already tried these avenues , but if not is worth a try. JS

If anyone would like the experience of sailing one of those beauties, one is chartered out from Portsmouth on a days sailing. They certainly had it right all those years ago, graceful in motion, kt

And here is another idea on using sails on cargo ships to reduce carbon emissions.

Thanks Graham, you seem to be able to pick ships out of thin air. Can you give me a description of a ship the Eastern Queen , I think. I have the name correct. About 1970 I was being carrot lead for a future job as master on such by Hong Kong owners , a brief future offer of the job was they were going to crop off passenger accomodation on her and make her cargo only . After the owner had left I heard another version by the master of ship I was on that he was going there and I was relieving him on the vessel we were both on, and she was being considered as a lightering vessel on the Hooghly . I was quite aware of the capability’s of the ship I was on as 4 knots was her tops and a 6 knot bore current on the Hooghly. Feelings on the ship were high and was another reason for walking off in Japan. The one I was on went to the scrapyard which I found out by being on this site after thinking for years that she had been lost with all hands. But the Eastern Queen has always intrigued me. JS.
PS I don’t think the owners I was with at the time had bought her at the time but were considering it. JS
