Time used at sea.

Lewis, i don't think anyone believes that seamen of any era had an easy time, for most here, including myself was just a different era. In our day the washing machine was a galvanised bucket, communications with loved ones was by snail mail, if it managed to catch up with you. Modern ships seem to have more comfort than in my time, but thats not belittling todays seamen. It seems on a lot of modern ships mostly that are short handed compared to my day. We are all here on this site living with old memories, frequently threw rose coloured glasses. As far as Marion goes, she does a lot of research on this site, and has helped me in the past. I in fact did appreciate you witty post, long may it continue

Well lewis to be honest i cant see what your problem is ..apart from you bombarding all and sundry with your sea career ...ok you probably did one of the longest sea times on the site ...but with respect a life down below would not have appealed to me.....and all that time from .home ...why this full page missive is aimed at me i have no idea .....as for that other person who has insulted just about half on board well he will make you a good ashore buddy no doubt .....now the last time you got on your high horse with me you invited yourself .to my home you thought and you made one big mistake....i invite people to my home not the other way round you then started to PM me at home not required .....you have today had words with me... jws.... ivan and marion .....i hesitate to send this to you but i dont like undercover PMs.....we have had a warning today due to confrontation with your buddy ...and i dont want to be banned again ...i respect who i believe deserves it .....but a life at sea is no reason to expect a bloody medal......cappy

#108 John seriously read what you have posted, are you saying as it used to be or what they are doing today? Black Plastic bags & Bottles over the side. If you have witnessed this while cruising get it on video as you will diffo get a few free cruises from the company as a PR exercise for bringing it to there attention. Bottles and cans would be retained onboard for to be landed for recycling. The world has moved on, that is unless you are sailing with a mickey mouse outfit.
Food waste has to be ground down and can be disposed of overboard. I think it has to be at least 3 miles from land and also that the area you are sailing through is not classified as a special area.

No Lewis, that was back in the good old days of UCL as an officers steward.
Now on cruise ships if you are caught even throwing a cig butt over the side you will be off the ship at next port of call.

#125. Cappy we used to have an old saying at sea , that the best way to get rid of the worse sea lawyer you had in the crowd was to promote him. If possible give him the bosuns job. If you ever saw this you would have seen the biggest transformation of a persons personality imaginable , from a whinging trouble maker , to a martinet , he/she had obviously been hiding their usage under a bushel . #13 Des my wife seems to have time on her mind and is always on to me about it " Its time you had a shave " or its " Time you had a haircut. " or " Its time you got off your backside and did something useful " it is a non ending commodity. If she took a moment in time and thought about all the money she could save on razors and Barbers and just wait till you were safe in your cocoon where I am told bodily hair no longer grows , then spending all that money is unnecessary. That song Time goes by so slowly, and time can do so much , must have really been a dill to misappropriate the Queens English by poor judgement. Cheers JS

But does it matter how long any of us were at sea?
We were at sea training school most of us then went to sea, that was it some stayed longer than others.

Some took to liners, others cargo or tankers in all manner of positions.

It does not matter the time spent, it was how we sued that time and what we learned from our time at sea.
