#108 John seriously read what you have posted, are you saying as it used to be or what they are doing today? Black Plastic bags & Bottles over the side. If you have witnessed this while cruising get it on video as you will diffo get a few free cruises from the company as a PR exercise for bringing it to there attention. Bottles and cans would be retained onboard for to be landed for recycling. The world has moved on, that is unless you are sailing with a mickey mouse outfit.
Food waste has to be ground down and can be disposed of overboard. I think it has to be at least 3 miles from land and also that the area you are sailing through is not classified as a special area.

John show me anywhere in my posts were I said all ships are run well and they all comply to current regulations. What I have said if they do not comply to the required regulations and they will be caught out they will be held to account. Never was involved in any seaman's strikes I came to sea in 1969, never worked out of the pool. I was in Numast which was a joke and had no influence what so ever over any decision a ship owner decided he was going to implement. Do not even know if Numast still exist perhaps they are now part of the RMT.
Attacked is a rather strong word to use John I called it self defence. Would you have accepted someone poking you on the chest and continued to do so after being warned to stop? but yes I knew exactly what I was doing and also knew that it would cost me my job. I was not sacked by the master as I had not even signed on. As I mentioned I never had a day out of work. The guy that sacked me in the office phoned while I was in the office Silver Marine services, which was just round the corner from Tithebarn St in Liverpool. I had a job within a couple of hours. You really are out of touch john , concerning certification, all vessels certificates are readily available in the ships office as part of HSE. When did you actually retire? A ships management structure has also changed. Every morning there is a ships management team meeting were basically they discuss what jobs are to be carried out during the day, power requirements , what ballast operations etc!! A lot is due to crew size and who will be available to do what. John please do not try and treat me like I was at sea for 5 minutes. Usually in my later years at sea I was the oldest on board and I am happy to say I was usually shown and treated with respect. I am sure like you it did not take long to suss out who knew what they were doing and who was winging it.

when i was a young teenager ...i had a family member or two who had been in sailing vessels .....even in a place like shields ....this was the highest accolade for seafaring families.......the men who sailed in the 30s 40s and 50s were also a special breed men with masters tickets sailing as ABs...and the war years.....i had a good friend whose first trip the vessel was lost in the baltic in winter in the lifeboat for two days or so ..his second trip was down south.georgia on the whaling factory ship southern harvester it was away for 22 or 24 months ......from those days to these days many changes .....i never did a full 12 months away but was very near to it then a few years ago i read of contracts ...ie 3 months away and then flown home on long leaves ...everything changes .....there are men i would sail with any where.......there are men i wouldnt go to the pubwith we are lucky to see the last of the old timers ...who new what hardships were ...they are here on this site ......there names are known to us ....they have seen it all ...and to dispute what they say is an affront....thats my view R636532

Oh please accept my apologies for not being born until 1949. Cappy how many years did you actually do at sea? You never did a 12 month trip? Longest I did was 14 months. First trip was 8 months. Ocean fleets depending if it was a Bluey or ED's was 4 to 5 months then coastal leave and join again at the last coastal port, deep sea again for 4 to 5 months. Ed's depending on the run could be as short as 30 days(mail boats, Fourah Bay, Aureol) deep sea and 10 days coastal leave or 2 to 3 months deep sea and coastal leave join again last port and deep sea again. Your choice if you wanted to stay on and do the coast as well so as you could get more sea time in to do your tickets. If you ended up on the West Africa USA service 6 months minimum. UASC usually 4 to 6 months. Petromin/Aramco 4 to 5 months war zone attacked on two occasions 3 dead during one attack. Stena , Bibby's 4 to 5 months, BP 3 to 5 months. Then they brought in back to back contracts for senior officers, yes I did reach those dizzy heights you could agree to do 3 months or work your trips out to suit each other for family time , holidays weddings etc! least you could agree to was 10 weeks on 10 weeks off. So tell me who here would turn that down back to back? Concerning some of the elder members on this forum there are some I have the utmost respect for, others I enjoy there wit and at times sarcasm others well !!!! today I posted what I thought might have been viewed as witty post and also an appeal for chill and stop bickering. Three posts later well obviously that fell on stony ground. I have broad shoulders and I am more than happy for ex seafarers to point out errors I have made no problems with that at all. I am confused though why Marian Gray is even on a Merchant Navy forum , correct me if I am wrong did Marian ever go to sea. If so fair play to you, then you have every right to be here. Keith gets slated daily, my understanding is that Keith is involved with the RNLI and also does work for maritime charities and has a genuine interest in the well being of seafarers. We need to get it together folks and stop the back biting we all know how this will pan out if we don't.
