advice on where to look for information
Good evening everyone,
I have recently found out that my great grandfather was a ships cook in the merchant navy but no clue on what ships he was on. Could someone point me in the right direction to look for information. I tried the national archives but as its by ship it was fairly daunting.
Thank you for anyones help.
Paula

Re: advice on where to look for information
Deleted last post as misread information. As he was born in 1963, same as me, unless you have his Discharge Book, I doubt you will find anything of his sea service as no official records were kept on individuals sea service between 1973-1999.

Re: advice on where to look for information
Think it was a typo and the lady meant 1863.

Re: advice on where to look for information
Think your best bet would be to go to the Archives in Southampton (when available again) and delve into their Maritime Records there, they may hold his Original Documents.
So far i have not been able to locate anything on him as far as his time at Sea goes
Cheers
Jus a note
After 1861 only a sample of crew lists and agreements and log books are held at The National Archives. Many do not survive at all whilst significant proportions of those that do survive are held at other archives, most notably
- ime History Archive in Canada – holds approximately 70% of the surviving crew lists and agreements for 1863-1938 and 1951-1976
- The National Maritime Museum – holds 10% of surviving agreements and crew lists for the periods 1861-1938 and 1951-1976

Re: advice on where to look for information
Have come up with the following, its a start
AE Andrews was on the Ship Valhalla Official Number 98461 from 29/10/07 to 237/08 he was 39 at the time .
This was a Private Yacht owned then by The Earl of Crawford and Registered in Cowes.
The Master was John G Caws.
As you can see his next Ship was the Adriatic of Liverpool.
A E |
ANDREW |
44 |
ST MAWES |
2ND COOK |
ADRIATIC, LIVERPOOL, 1907 |
So with that Ship Number one can now look for the official Crew List and trace back or forward his Ships? That is left to you
Cheers
