Must be something about pubs with similar names, reminded me of the Horse and Jockey in Ellesmere Port, mid sixties, first trip, went ashore and in as it was first bar we came across. We were recommended to use the "lounge" bare floorboards and trestle tables with long forms to sit on. The only two other occupants were "LADIES", we had little cash to flash so resorted to a little friendly banter, until they offered to punch our lights out so we decided to move elsewhere.

Then there was Monties in Sydney, something else.
Still there I am told but not as it was, like everything else over time it changes, but not always for the best.

When we first came to Oz some of the pubs, and this was early 80's, still had 'ladies' only bars and according to my brother in law you were better off not being in one.

Another close shave ...At a buoy in the river at Bangkok , went ashore with the ch,stwd. During the day via a sampan. No problems negotiating a path over all the boats alongside the jetty . Coming back was a different story however as took a walk into space . It was a very hot day and found myself sitting quite contentedly on the river bed in a state of bliss. Finally on looking up could see light filtering rhrough the water , and decided. To have a look see. Apparently on my head reserviceing someone grabbed it and pulled me inboard , I remember thinking I was better off sitting on the bottom , this must be when life starts to depart. The next day was standing at the rail watching all the river life re boats etc. I noticed all the water snakes and all the garbage being dumped in the river. And my skin crawled , good job the fresh water wasn’t rationed at that moment in time. JS.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you , that you can’t drown in the Bitter Lakes in Suez. My first trip to sea anchored in the Bitter lakes someone said they were that salty you couldn’t drown. So I jumped in , lost count on the number of times came to the surface but am sure it was in excess of three. On manageing to get back to the accomodation ladder went back on board and put a life jacket on and continued bathing aided and abetted with such. JS

This is what happens when you don’t look where you are going. This is the hole where the port anchor used to come out of. Cheers JS

The above is a picture of the Exmoor and yours truly in the River Plate after a collision with the Dutch passenger vessel the Rhuys , printed by courtesy of Vernon, thanks Doc. I am standing in the enlarged Hawse pipe of the port anchor .This was also the vessel with the 14 double DRs . This was in 1962. Moral of the story , look where you are going. JS
