Rosewood WW11 medal query
Hi,
My Great Uncle was John Black Gartshore and died when his Merchant ship -The Rosewood, was blown up in the Atlantic by a German U-Boat in March 1943. It was carrying a tanker of fuel at the time and everyone on board perished immediately.
He is remembered on the Memorial at Tower Hamlets in London and wondered whether there would have been a posthumous medal awarded at the time? I believe some Merchant seaman were awarded medals and wanted to know how to actually check whether this incident warranted a medal or not and if one was issued, as he was single at the time and had no wife or children/
Thanks.

Karen if you give his date and place of birth, our boys will be able to narrow it down, but may have enough with his name and vessel, he would most certainly have been entitled to the Atlantic medal, give it a little time.

Re: Rosewood WW11 medal query
Hello Karen.
Just wondering if you have looked at the archives:
How to look for records of...
Merchant seamen’s campaign medal records 1939-1945
https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/...rds-1939-1945/
https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/fi...K%20GARTSHORE/
Busy today, but certain more assistance from the team here will come.
Regards,
Keith.

Re: Rosewood WW11 medal query
Be patient Karen, the experts on this thread helped me tremendously, they are tops at digging out things. I think he would also be eligible for the War Medal 1939-1945.
If his ship entered the Arctic Ocean say delivering oil to Russia, as my aunt's father's vessel did, he is also eligible for the Arctic Star, which I have applied for on her behalf. My aunt's father's vessel, SS Bateau, also was owned by the US Maritime Commission thus he is also eligible, even though the ship was registered in Panama and he was British Merchant Navy, for the US Mariner's Medal and The US Atlantic War Zone medal. I have applied for both for his daughter. He was awarded the Atlantic Star and the War Medal posthumously and they were sent to his widow. Are you sure his next of kin did not receive them?

Re: Rosewood WW11 medal query
Hi,
Unfortunately, I do not know, and he has no surviving brothers and sisters that I can speak to. He never married, so I dont know if anyone would've claimed anything years ago? That's why I'm trying to find out if a- something was awarded posthumously and b- was it received by a member of my extended family? Just didnt want it lying unclaimed if there was indeed something given out. He was my paternal Grandfathers brother and died on my Grandfathers 21st birthday. I am unsure, as to who it would go to if it was claimed now as well?
I have been informed he may have qualified for the Atlantic medal but nothing appears listed.

This was the tanker that he died on. It was carrying a cargo of fuel from NY when it was blown up by a German U-boat. The ship broke in half and is scuttled somewhere South of Iceland in the Atlantic.
