Hi, Hope this is ok to post..
I'm trying to find some records and I'm a bit lost where to start, from an old picture I found I believe my grandad was in the Merchant Navy in the 1930s,
I think he was on the RMMV Winchester Castle the picture has a date of 1934.. Id love to know what role he had etc
Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

If his name had been Siggers and it was 14 years later could have helped. Dave Siggers was bellboy on I think the Queen Mary in 1948. He is still alive as far as I know . He finished up as chief steward with I think ANL. Anyone on site in Oz know him ? Just a long shot . Not to impede the posters original request. JSy

Seem very formal wear which I thought was strange, from what I’ve read I believe at that time the ship was a Royal Merchant Mail Vessel

All very odd, could he have been a steward on that ship as I believe they had passengers as well as mail?
On the back of the photo is where it says 1934 Winchester Castle

The RMMV WINCHESTER CASTLE was built in 1930 by Harland & Wolff. Of 20,000 grt (1939) she was 657 feet in length and 75.6 feet wide. Twin screw diesels provided a service speed of 20 knots. Her capacity was for 189 First and 398 Tourist passengers.

Further records if found may help to work much out, guess would be an early voyage / first / last? Still in training to become a steward possibly. At his age doubtful a passenger. Pos gave up any thing sea wise and with WW2 worked in the war effort etc. Will look at military records also ASAP.
