He was a riveted and welder, possibly at Goodwood during the war, but that’s all I know

Possibly tried the sea but, decided it was not for him or
felt he could help in the war effort better at home.

In reality, possibly. Early days but, most likely.
Touch wood more will be found, fingers crossed.
Will try and find out if he was a passenger or crew etc but, at his age then
would guess at working and out having a break.
No ciggie in hand, though pos, a bit of time out. Bow tie and no jacket suggests to me,
a member of the catering side, let's see what else comes up.
Regards, Keith.
Getting back to the young man in the photo, I would plumb for waiter, as an officer posing for a photo would wear a jacket so his girl friend would go wow! when she saw his stripe(s).
The bow tie looks a different shade of black in the photo to his trousers, suggesting it is either dark red or maroon, and didn't first class waiters wear red/maroon waistcoats or red/maroon bumfreezer jackets in the saloons in UCL
Thanks everyone really appreciate the help, I was only a child when he died and very little knowledge in the family of this time in his life
The Uniform he is wearing there is for sure a Deck Steward , i know this from my own experience and that of my late Uncle, i to was on the Winchester Castle but a lot later of course
Will look futher and see what comes up
Cheers

There is a Crew list for 1934 at the Archives of the University of Canada this would give you a lot of info on him. Dont know how they are going now though with the Covid. You can Email them and ask if they are at this time still doing research.
Cheers
