Served my time on some 12 passenger ships (more than enough for me ugh!) I was once asked what the rondel was on top of the for'd wooden topmast and what was it called, told her it was called a truck and it prevents rain and seawater getting into the top of the mast thus stopping it splitting. She said NO! tell me what it's really for, so I told her it was still called a truck, but at night we filled it with seagull **** and wheeled it away. Thus ended my career on passenger vessels

I have seen a list of the most stupid questions asked on ships, now and in the past.

Where do the ice cravings go when they melt. Back in the fridge
Where do the crew sleep, In their beds
Where does the electricity come from. A very long lead from shore side
Do the crew have to cook their own food. No they have take aways flown in each day.

The list is endless.

Young deck boy was splicing a rope, a woman passenger came up and asked what he was doing, "Making a dogs cock." he said. The woman was aghast and stomps off to the skipper, the skipper tells her that a dogs cock is a nautical term for a back splice. So off she went to apologize to the lad, She said I'm very sorry I didn't realize that a dogs cock was a nautical term for a back splice. He said, That's alright missus I F%#*d it up anyway .

As regards knots the one you could not fail on was the common old reef knot, if you made a mess of that one you finished up with a granny knot , and could always say that was your intention in the first place . In the paper today a story about a small town in an EU country.
It has now officially changed its name to Fugging.

Apparently so many visitors, many from UK, had their photo taken along side of the towns name post of F#@()&ng.
