    Default How long

An article on the news toady regarding shipping and the effects of the Virus on crew members.

According to the report there are about 100,000 crew members who have not been allowed ashore for the past 20 months and governments should do something about it. Would hardly think it is a government issue.

Apparently the ships are allowed into ports around the world but the crew ae not allowed ashore due to the Virus.

Here in Oz in WA there have been a number of ships where crew members with the Virus have been taken to local hospitals.

But until there is a Vaccine there is little chance these crew members will be allowed any time soon.

At an average of about 15 crew per ship, and that is often all there are on some, then there would be around 6,000 or so ships effected.

I know there ae some on this site who when on Tramps were away from home for longer, but at times did get ashore.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

Different set of circumstances, but I spent from 17/3/76 until 5/3/78 on one ship. However, was on 20% extra pay and no tax. Also running between Japan and the Gulf. Had a little house at a place called Hamakoshien just outside of Kobe for part of the time and my wife was on board for a good chunk of the time as well. Got plenty of time ashore, Karachi, Dubai, Kuwait etc up the Gulf and Penang, HK, Moji, Hakata, Kobe, Yokohama etc. at the east end of the trip. A round trip was about 4 months with the occasional 3 month "flyer" thrown in. And don't forget, it was anything but a dry ship. The bar opening hours were pretty good, 0001 'til 2359, or there abouts. Those poor lads stuck on those ships now must be going stir crazy.
Yes John the "old" times went by in a happy daze.
    Regards,
    Geoff.
