I went down the Pier Head to say good Bye to my Dech Boy brother , he was on the Empress of France, they shouted for a "Stand By Man" I shouted "Me" I got on and we sailed for Montreal. I had no gear just my suit. So I wa s back at sea. .

the problem is that the communists in the sixties have left their legacy, as the students of the sixties are now the professors in the universities,whom are now espousing their treacherous rhetoric to their pupils, and in every other walk of life in this country the poisonous left is going about its deadly business, which can be seen in marches and sit downs all across the country, with each group demanding their rights as they see it, but secretly their only agenda is to smash the system, or anarchy ,

yes tom this is so correct ....but again it is not realised by so many....the same faces ie corbyns brother at every demo against the society we with our labours have created .....i cannot believe people are dying in there thousands from covid ...and our cradle to grave society is whinging about bloody xmas ...what a breed we have bred.....well they may yet reap the whirlwind when the country is bankrupt and the wonderful benefits all stop...and that is not so far away ....cappy

the bright new world that these young people are looking for, that corbyn and his cohorts promise under the banner of ( all for one and one for all ) is a pathetic slogan that falls to bits when those at the top of the tree live in million pound houses, its only people of our generation whom have seen and had it hard can see right through these bullsh***tters, for as you know quite well you get nothing in this life by sitting on your ass waiting for somebody to give it to you, you have to go out and get it,

#3... Before Slater became the Secretary of the NUS he was on the colliers. I remember being in the Office at 56 Pilgrim street , N/C on Tyne , and all the office staff were crowing he had been black balled by all the NE shipowners. The next time I heard of him he had them by the short and curlies and they were screaming foul. As mate on British ships I had a lot of contact with the NUS some bad some good. I have delayed a pay off arguing about half an hours overtime , the union didnt win, it was the principle involved as the person in question was a layabout. There were some very good and some shifty people working under the banner of the NUS the same as in every walk of life. To seperate the wheat from the chaff is always hard to do, I was quite happy working under the maritime union of Australia , purely that they got excellent deals for Australian seamen and myself being one of them got the same , the economics to the layman doesnt exist, just his own welfare , the same as the shipowner. So very true.
Having spent some 14 years in the Uni system I saw them all. They would com eon campus at the start of the year and look for the new studenst with the hope of getting them on board.
It got so bad at one point they were eventually banned from campus.

they had a little galley of there own and cooked the best curries .....regardless of seeing them come out the heads with there little tin cans ...i stuffed myself with proper curry when ever i could.....they allways had one or two onthe wacky baccy .....we had one we all called hashish he was always in space lol......they would have somali enclaves all over the world and often asked for tea to take to there cousins .....always found them good shipmates but they did keep very much to themselves....ps john i tested your new email adress did you get it .....cappy

This thread began with a simple post from Vic that Greek ships account for 50% of EU merchant fleet.
As the Greeks have always had a large merchant fleet this should not come as a surprise.
The post was immediately hijacked by an ex member of the National Union of Seamen to once again air his obsessions and prejudice's on the subject of trade unions and the decline of our own merchant fleets. There are some of us on site who were at sea when all the changes in our industry were taking place, we lived through them and witnessed at first hand the decline of our ships. I do not speak for others but I do not need to be told by someone who had long since swallowed the anchor about events he has no knowledge of.
