Thanks for that Fouro, what an extraordinary tale, and then for Brian to sail on the same named Star boat built in Germany for the British.

The "Ship that never was' is actually a fact depicted in a play at Strahan in Tasmania. The ship was the last vessel built at Maria Island and was due to sail from there to Port Arthur with the remaining convicts and stores. Shortly before sailing, the crew mutinied and sailed the ship to Chile where they stayed for a few years before being returned to Hobart to stand trial.
At the trial it was discovered that the ship had never been registered, and crew maintained they could not have stolen it because it had never been registered. They were found guilty.
The whole play is produced by a few locals with the help of the audience and consists of building a replica from a heap of oddments and telling the whole story. Well worth seeing.
Have watched a couple of times, first time was in a howling west coast gale and driving rain.

    Hello Des,
The MV Adelaide 2 that Brian sailed on was built at John Brown's Shipyard in Clydebank.
It was definately not built in Germany as pointed out by him.

    Fouro.

    Hello Brian,

When you were serving aboard the 'MV Adelaide Star', was the skipper's name, Captain OC Roberts?.
Captain Roberts retired in 1957, the 'Adelaide Star' being his last ship.

    Fouro.
It looks like when you were serving aboard the Adelaide in 1957 Brian, a new Master must have taken over command of the ship from Captain Roberts.

I would mention whether you served on his ship or not, Captain Roberts was such an iconic figure well known throughout the Blue Star company for his kindness and how he treated his colleagues who served under him.
He was made a C.B.E. in 1946 for long and meritorious service to the Merchant Navy.
I find it hard to believe Brian (Capt Kong) hasn't written one word about him.

    Regards from
    Fouro.
