Hope to do more research on the topic thread later today.

His name appears on the list of Apprentice indentures in Folkestone, most of the other apprentices are indentured to North East shipping companies, so he must have started his sea going life in the Merchant Navy, no apprenticeships in the Royal Navy as far as I am aware.
Just a thought, with him being indentured in Folkestone, was he an apprentice on the pilot cutters, the cap is similar to one often worn by pilots,

Thanks John not only both interesting and helpful but,
pos an important step in what is sought.

Not too sure on this however after a lot of research i find a R Whitehead serving on the Ship Mendoza around the late 1860' to early 1870' mark and also a bit beyond that. Following the Link that i got it takes me only to the Canadian Archives ,which shows dates of Crew for that Ship for those Years
Official_No: 29629 Mendoza 1863: J1 1864: J1 1867: I1 1868: I1 1869: I1 1870: I1 1871: E1 1872: E2 1874: E1 1876: E2 1877: E2 1878: E2 1879: E2 1880: E2 1881: E2 1884: E2 1886: E2 1887: E2 1888: E2 1890: E2 1891: E2 1892: E2
However as said this is just a feint possibility???
On a Crew Document of a Captains Signature , which did relate to a R Whitehead (Although there are no names on the Document) it however did mention the name ???
Again i am certainly not sure as its very difficult to Pin Point this info.
Cheers

Not saying that he was for sure at any time in US Services but if you look at this Pic and the Cap, looks so similar. Topcoat as well This is from an Officer US Merchant Marine ??
