Another MN Master arrested. Greek authorities have arrested the Master of the Maersk Launceston careless navigation and for colliding with Greek minesweeper Kallisto. No mention of the C O. of the minesweeper being arrested. The minesweeper lost its stern in the incident. Looks like you are now arrested until proven innocent, no indication that it could have been the small naval vessel misjudging the ML's speed and trying to cross ahead of her

The mine sweeper in the collision was an ex RN one we sold to the Greek navy some years ago. It's hull is built using GRP in order to reduce it's chance of detonating magnetic mines.

The company I have worked for last 20 years, manufactures a fairly unique form of GRP. We pre compose it and supply it on rolls a metre wide and 10 mtrs, long, it is 1.5 mm thick and is covered by nylon film top and bottom to stop the whole lot sticking together and it cures by exposure to daylight.
Around 2005 I was invited to a lab within the Rosyth naval base, as they were curious about our material. In this very large building they had a huge slice of hull from a minesweeper, I have never ever seen such a thick GRP material, I cant remember exactly but it must have been at least an inch or more. I have been involved in composites for the last 30 years and have seen nothing to compare

As far as can be ascertained at the moment weather was clear and ML was only doing 6.6 knots when the collision occurred. Navy vessels tend to take chances with MN vessels passing ahead when they should give way, we have seen it so often at sea, they either don't think the Coll Regs apply to them, or don't know them enough, then there is the fact that there are so many people on the bridge of a naval vessel, no one actually knows who is in charge. Guess we'll have to wait a bit though

Hi Tony, we had a Pearl mother ship working out of Darwin which at the time was the largest Australian registered GRP commercial vessel. Quite eerie sitting in mess room watching waves go by. She had been built in Japan for the Paspaley Pearl company.

while holidaying on orpheus island on the barrier reef my wife and i got the use of a small boat we took a picnic and puttered round till we found a tiny island ....we put our picnic basket out a really impressive haul......after eating we laid on the sand ....but were woken by human voices ....it was a small pearl fisher about four or five hands we watched for a while while they dived .....then one came out saying there is a big bugger down there.....stay out .....i was not happy....was it a great white or a bloody salty .....in the boat and puttered back to orpheus at a speed which the boat was not designed for ....cappy
