Terry I was at Mina 1959 on Br. Triumph 12000 Tons at our next visit this monster of tanker was ahead of us, it felt like a sabbath days walk getting to the tin hut that was the mission, and what about the metal gate at the end of the jetty which was locked to prevent us nasty seamen getting ashore, also page 3 was always torn out of the sun paper, they kept that for themselves. Vernon, a pint of Guinness for breakfast was always good and with a Senior Service even better.

But there was a story about the 'Twitch' name given to Newcastle Brown.

The chief brewer went on leave and his assistant left in charge.
He made a brew but some who in a different way.
When the chief brewer came back he was told by the brewery to use the assistants method as the public said it was far better.
Maybe just a story, but there were many about that brew.

Came down the coast from Sunderland on a coaster on my way back to London, as a guest.
Two days, only food on board, dry bread and a load of cases of the brew.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Can honestly say apart from one vessel, the cooks on the coasters and colliers I sailed on produced decent grub, when you consider the smallness of their galleys and having to cope with bucking bronco conditions prevalent for most of the year in HT waters, Elbe to Brest but which also heading Atlantic wards to WC Ireland and the weather off that coast in winter, my hats off to them.

Hats off to most ships cook in my time, apart from the odd duff, n , i can honestly say the grub i had at sea was good, 2nd cook was always punished if he baked good bread, we ate twice as much of it !!!, i was amazed when i went to sea(1957) at the food, much better than i had at home (i did not come from a deprived home, and mum was a good cook), eg steak egg and chips for evening meal every Friday !! bloody hell, i was in heaven, kt
