#15.. Next time you maybe forced to use it Colin , 12 years ago you were 12 years younger . On my last trip over, I was over 80 , so the wife had to drive fortuanetly she was under 80. I couldnt be bothered to catch trains etc. too much hazzle. Would only go back now in an emergency in any case. Or the likes of Cappy saying he had found that case of whiskey he forgot to post on. JS

they should pos have free anyway, comes over as a bit of a kick in the teeth.

I don't know why you describe it as a kick in the teeth, try going to London from Torquay on a free bus with luggage, the changes are numerous and the time is 9 - 10 hours. The train is 2.5/3 hours and can get a return ticket for for £25/30 depending on time of day.

3)Many see the strict criteria for MN unfair compared to the armed forces, little has changed.

Alas this has always been so, and will never change, but if anything can reduce the costs, then surely it is welcome and the conditions are not too onerous. Your wife/partner and family can also benefit

    .
I cannot for the life of me understand the animosity engendered. I simply posted a message about something that may(or may not) benefit some members if they are rail users and if it appealed to them. If you disagree with this, then it surely makes a mockery of the postcript on your every posting as the benefit is for ALL veterans of any Service as well as MN

Anyway that's all from me on the subject

Going off subject slightly but it is relevant to seamen.
When my dad was returned home from West Africa after being held as POW he was given a rail warrant to travel from Scotland.
Later when he was recovering in the Liverpool hospital for tropical diseases my mum brought him two letters, one letter was a demand to repay the rail warrant the other from the shipowners informing him that when his ship was torpedoed he was in debt to the ship and they wanted the money he owed repaid.

Im 84 next birthday and still driving. all you need after I think 80 is a doctor to tick you off as fit to drive every year. The MOT however can if they want examine you themselfs to see if still capable. they may do this if you have been involved in a serious accident or if you have been incapacitated for any length of time due to illness etc. My next licence is due in January , I have just had my second eye done for catarracts so hopefull wont be any problem . Unless of course senility sets in faster than expected. Cheers JS OAPs dont pay for a licence here. JS

There is no age limit John for the licence as far as authorities are c, but you will find it very difficult to hire a car after reaching 80, most of the majors have a time limit of 75 years, you tell them that it is age discrimination, but you may as well talk to a piece of cheese

#22. The tone was set by you in reality #'s 1-6.

No one is having a go, just adding content that is relevant,
In reality all that is on offer is saving a few bob between
now and March at a time when it is best not to travel.

Anyone else can just get a rail card deal when they may
want or if they need one anyway.

Rail bosses need the money of you now, your choice.

They are happy to take money off you, print veteran on
a card you might not use.

Many have or not bothered with the actual Senior Railcard.

All choose for themselves but, nothing wrong with having
    some info.

In NSW the Driving is as such!
When you reach the age of 75 you then have to go every Year to the Doctor for a Medical and also if you have any Eye Disorders ( eg Cataracts etc) you must also see your Optometrist. Both are on the same form that has to be filled in and Submitted to the Roads and Traffic Authority (Now Maritime and Roads) Once passed your Licence is renewed Automatically for another Year.
At age 85 you then have to on top of the above go for a Practical Driving Test each Year , you are allowed to use your own Car.
The actual age of ceasing is dependable on the way things go Yaer after Year.

As regards Road and Rail travel for local travel is free for OAPs. in W.A. for long distances such as up to Broome are allowed 3 trips a year. The local free travel has to be outside of Peak times which are 0800 t0 0900 and 1700 to 1800 I think as very rarely use. JS

Australia, a country made up of ex cons, and too many states all with different regulations as to driving and a few other things.

Here in Victoria it is, as is the case across the nation, to discriminate on the grounds of age, color, sexual preference, religion or race.
But when it comes to the road rules all the states are different.

Here in Victoria there is no age restriction, how ever if you get a bit dodgy in your old age you may be restricted to a 20 klm radius, that applies to some Stroke victims.
No need for eye test but must notify if you were glasses. But here is another oddity, I have glasses for driving but not for normal wear, so do not have to declare them.

But any one over 75 must now have an annual GP medical to make sure you are not suffering from depression or early onset Dementia.

Last year in Ireland we, as normal, hired a car, as we have done many time previously.
I had written to the Road authority there as the question of International licenses had come up.
No worries mate your Oz one is fine.

Get to the desk to be told that any one over 75 is mot allowed to hire a car, locals until 80.
Showed them the letter, fine, but next time you will require a letter from your GP and a copy of your vehicle insurance in Oz.

Took a hire car in London for two days, not a word from them.
But driving in London now, forget it mate, too many mad men on the roads.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.
