    Default Discharge Book or not

I don't ever recall having a Discharge Book, and no-one ever asked me for one.

    Hi Richard
All Seaman had or have a Discharge Book at one time or the other, it is a Record of your Ships you were on and your behaviour character while with a Company.

It is impossible for you not to have had one. or some sort of Record of Service anyway.

Perhaps as R/O with Marconi, we didn't get issued Discharge Books. To my knowledge, I never had one, as Marconi normally dealt with all our joining/leaving arrangements. Perhaps some other ex-R/O's can advise if a discharge book was required, but no-one ever questioned me on this.

I cannot say 100% here Ricky but as far as i am aware all Seaman no matter what Rank or Job they do have to have a Seamans Discharge Number , thus a Book to go along with it.
Also we all on site have had this Book as well as a Seamans ID Card!

I stand corrected on this however ???????

Although this refers to Yachts on this , it does mention all Ship , exceptions are listed. But i doubt if any apply to you
    Cheers

    Hi Denis
When you say your Dis Book was not use on certain Ships / does that mean that the trips were not recorded?? If so that would be very strange!
Just asking thats all , as this Topic is important i feel to get to know what and why Books may have been stopped at some stage ??

    Denis
Thanks for that, i have been looking up various sites on this issue and came across a site that says that later in Years (think they were on about late in the 80's or so may be later) Ships issued ID Paper Cards to Crew , these were so Crew could get around places on the Ship (apparently some places wee not allowed to some??) sort of a Security pass.
I suppose much like a lot of large Businesses these days that issue Lapel ID Cards .

However all Voyages and conduct were still entered on each Seamans Record, which now days is all Computerised, and if at some stage the person in question wanted a record, then he has to apply for it through his Maritime Agency wherever that may be. What a shambles!
So looks like at this time and age there seems to be no more Seamans Books that one can keep after Service, what a shame!
Give me the old life any day! It was s much better and exciting!

#11 That awoke a memory, when I sailed as Mar Supt around the Aussie Coast on a Panama flagged vessel, had to sign on Articles in Perth and signed off in Sydney and was issued with paper discharge signed by the Shipping Master and the Master complete with ship's stamp, and incidentally also got a VG VG for conduct and ability (for some reason!)
