The Real Truth
As believe it was glossed over for a brief period in a post sometime ago in ref. To the war years misdemeanours committed during hostilities , but can anyone produce any actual reports of the sequence of events from the tales that went around in Shipping circles. Briefly the story I was lead to believe was kosher was that “ A group of NE shipowners which was lead to believe was Runciman, Ropenors, Chapman’s And Dalgliesh “s were given government support and authority to build small vessels at Blyth possibly for minesweeping operations. However again supposedly it was discovered that large sums of money was being misdirected into the purchase of property buying. R.S Dalgliesh was said to have taken the fall for this and received a small period of time say 3 months for this re distribution of money. Having worked for two of these companies the stories were only hearsay to me and I put it down to the usual seaman’s talk. But where there is talk there is usually a streak of truth. Anyone know the real story ? Cheers JS

Re: The Real Truth
If Billy is reading this, he may be able to throw some light on it John as he probably knows more about Ropners than any other on this site and may be able to offer some clarification, if of course, he feels inclined to.

Re: The Real Truth
I am quoting Ropenors which maybe incorrect but if memory is correct there were 4 company’s involved, think I was told Ropeys was one of them. I know Dalgliesh was after a knighthood so the talk was , but would never get as having a short criminal record. He spent a lot of money developing Port Churchill to no avail. That family had a lot of personal heartbreak not too long after I left. Cheers JS...

Re: The Real Truth
Nothing I can see about dirty work at the crossroads. But there again News is what certain people wish to put out especially in wartime. Truth is only what some want others to know. Anyhow among seafaring families in the NE is passed down generation to generation .JS

#4 The grandson and grand daughter of old Dalgliesh who used to visit the ships regularly both died at an early age. One believed to be suicide and one through a family dysfuntual ailment ,both very nice people , would have been in their late 20s or early thirty’s at the time. JS
