Default Whoops here we go again

One of the world's largest container vessels has demolished a crane in Valencia port.

Ah! well, the lads may get a run ashore, or maybe another captain heading for the clink, which seems to be the favoured course these days

I can see the problem there.
They put the cranes too close to the edge of the dock and do not allow for some pilots who really do need to go to Specsavers, along with a number of skippers as well.

Yes, agree John, as ships get bigger with larger bow overhangs then crane siting and design needs to be rethought. As for Pilots and Masters needing to go to Specsavers then we must remember that these people are also human and mistakes do happen, some by them and some beyond their control. When you think of the number of port movements being enacted around the world at anyone moment then the amount of major incidents is miniscule. When you think of the surface area of a fully loaded 200,000 tonne container vessel then one small gust of wind can alter all your well planned approach with no time to rectify. The only thing you can do is watch in horror and a feeling of despair as kinetic energy rules your future.

It looks like they will have to get back to conventional ships, these massive ships seem to be at the mercy of every whisper of wind, even a tugs wash may be a problem. There is an alternative, give the crane driver a parachute.

Very true Ivan, they get bigger by the day.

Interesting bit on our SBS TV last night which included a bit about the port of Singapore.

Now own of the two largest in the world with as many as 1,000 ships at any time waiting to load or discharge.
Having been there in recent years I can agree wit that.

But they are now reclaiming land to further enlarge the port.

There will be about six new fingers for ships to dock at.
By the time it is all complete in about 2024 Singapore will be the worlds largest port.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

As an aside MSC are expanding their fleet by buying 2nd hand tonnage, bit like reverting to there origins where their tonnage were all 2ndor even 3rd hand. They kept Antwerp dry docks fully employed refurbishing that old tonnage.
