Cattle ships
News today that a ship with some 6,000 cattle on board and 43 crew is missing somewhere off the coast of Japan.
The empty life boat has been found and one crew member on a life raft has ben picked up.
There is the added danger of another Typhoon in the area and it is thought that the frits one may be the cause of this disapearance.
As to the cattle there is no mention.
I find the live stock industry to be abhorant, NZ I believe have stopped theirs and it has not hurt the country.
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Cattle ships
Maybe the gas emissions from 6,000 cattle would make it as volatile as a Gas Tanker.
One ciggy and BANG.
Maybe the crew and shippers didnt know that

Re: Cattle ships
The last AIS position was 2 weeks ago, so possibly not that recent. Nonetheless a very sad state of affairs.

Re: Cattle ships
One crew member, its chief officer, was rescued after been spotted floating in his life jacket in the water. He says the ship had an engine failure prior to capsizing and that he didn't see any other crew members escaping.
From the photo of her in freemantle she looks pretty ropey. As an aside, how do they transport live cattle, in individual pens or open areas?

Re: Cattle ships
Whilst on Bibby cargo vessel Lancashire we transported 4000 live sheep from Fremantle to Jurong. They were carried on deck in pens accompanied by 6 drovers. On the passage we lost about 6 of the sheep, their carcases were jettisoned over the wall. The drovers fed and watered them. Fortunately the weather was calm for the 6 day passage.

Re: Cattle ships
Latest news.
One crew member found alive who says engines failed and a rouge wave hit the ship and she capsized.
He took a life jacket and jumped.
Another crew member, Australian Vet, pulled from water but is not consious.
Taken to hospital, some dead cattle found floating in the sea.
Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Cattle ships
Thanks for starting this string John #1. NZ continues to export live cattle - this ship departed Napier, NZ, with its load. Govt has now put such exports on temporary suspension pending a review. Another crew member found alive today though has died since. The entire live cattle and sheep export should be stopped in my view as the reported seagoing treatment of animals doesn't say much in favour. Strangely perhaps, on NZ radio today a vet who is said to have done multiple voyages with cattle/sheep stated that ship conditions, in his experience, have been mostly better than many farmers provide.

Re: Cattle ships
According to reports; and there have been many of them, the ship had plenty of problems with the engines prior to this trip; and I wouldn't swear to it but it looks like they broke down in the typhoon and she capsized. many of the cattle have been washing ashore in China. NZ had many freezing works and had always sent frozen carcass before, I don't know why they changed , then of course; maybe cheaper this way, but not for the men on board.
It's a pity the it wasn't stopped by the WWF, would have been a problem solved.

Thanks Ken, thought for some time the live export did stop, must have started again.
Last time we were there in 2018 there were a number of live export ships all tied up and we were told the trade had come to a stop due to so many protests from locals.

Re: Cattle ships
Queensland has announced they intend to build a huge new freezing works, I hope that goes ahead, jobs for locals and a stop to live exports.
